Our Farm
Our ancestors have lived in Katharinaberg for a very long time. However, not on today’s farmstead — they once lived in the “old” farmhouse, which can still be found in the village center today. The first owner of the Moarhof was the great-great-great-grandfather of the current farmer. Over the generations, through inheritance and division, the farm developed into what it is today. In the past, the farm didn’t only include the land around Katharinaberg itself, but also the forest and alpine pastures stretching from the riverbed all the way up to the summit cross.
Over the centuries, this land was divided several times, and ownership often changed hands. Part of the Moarhof is also the Moaralm, which to this day remains an important part of the farm. The oldest sections of the property date back to the Middle Ages. The current farmstead was built in 1976 by Stefan and Angela Müller, the grandparents of today’s farmer, Valentin Müller, with the help of the whole family. The name Moar is quite common in South Tyrol’s villages. In earlier times, it referred to a respected free farmer and is linguistically related to the German word Meier, which used to designate the largest and most important farm in a village. Even back then, the house was built in its current size, including the holiday apartments.
Our farm lies at 1,245 meters above sea level in Katharinaberg in the Schnalstal Valley, surrounded by our own meadows and pastures. This peaceful setting allows our guests to enjoy a truly relaxing and restful stay with us. In earlier times, the grandfather mainly cultivated grains such as rye, buckwheat, and wheat, and kept several animals. The hard manual work of farming the meadows and fields was made a little easier with the help of two oxen. Later, when his son Karl and his wife Johanna took over the farm, they focused on cattle farming, and the holiday apartments provided an important additional source of income. A new utility building was also constructed to store agricultural equipment and machinery. In 2015, the farm was taken over by Valentin Müller and his family.
Today, Valentin (born 1983), Michaela (born 1984), and their children Lea (born 2003), Sophie (born 2007), Hagen (born 2009), and their first grandchild Josef (born 2025) warmly welcome you and wish you a relaxing and unforgettable holiday filled with wonderful experiences. A recent addition to the farm is the archery course and the blacksmith’s workshop. Valentin worked for several years at the ArcheoParc in the Schnalstal Valley, where he gained valuable experience that he now gladly shares with his guests and visitors. Blacksmithing is a true passion project — it’s relaxing and inspiring at the same time. With many precise hand movements and skilled hammer blows, something old is transformed into something new. The smell of coal, the sound of the hammer striking glowing iron, and the rhythm of the work are simply fascinating.
